چکیده

The distribution of shocks to GDP growth rates is found to be exponential rather than normal. Their standard deviation b scales with GDP where b 5 2 0.1560.03. These macroeconomic results place restrictions on the microeconomic structure of interactions between agents.  1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

A Re-Examination of the Predictability of Economic Activity Using the Yield Spread

This paper revisits the yield spread's usefulness for predicting future real GDP growth. We show that the contribution of the spread can be decomposed into the effect of expected future changes in short rates and the effect of the term premium. We find that both factors are relevant for predicting real GDP growth but the respective contributions differ. We investigate whether the cyclical behav...

Common scaling behavior in finance and macroeconomics

In order to test whether scaling exists in finance at the world level, we test whether the average growth rates and volatility of market capitalization (MC) depend on the level of MC. We analyze the MC for 54 worldwide stock indices and 48 worldwide bond indices. We find that (i) the average growth rate 〈r〉 of the MC and (ii) the standard deviation σ(r) of growth rates r decrease both with MC a...

On growth and volatility regime switching models for New Zealand GDP data

This paper reviews and documents methodology for fitting hidden Markov switching models to New Zealand GDP data. A primary objective is to better understand the utility of these methods for modelling growth and volatility regimes present in the New Zealand data and their interaction. Properties of the models are developed together with a description of the estimation methods, including use of t...

The determinants of macroeconomic volatility: A Bayesian model averaging approach

Bayesian model averaging is applied to robustly ascertain the determinants of various output volatility measures, including the downside semideviation of growth rates. Financial sophistication variables are found to have qualitatively different effects on volatility. The ratio of government expenditure to GDP exhibited a significant positive relationship with volatility and the trade share of G...

Comment on : ‘ ‘ Can financial innovation help to explain the reduced volatility of economic activity ? ’ ’ $

As Dynan, Elmendorf, and Sichel (henceforth DES) note, the volatility of economic activity fell substantially sometime from the middle of the 1980s to the early 1990s. This decline is documented by McConnell and Perez-Quiros (2000) and Kim and Nelson (1999). Indeed, as shown in Table 1 of DES, the standard deviation of quarterly GDP growth was 4.4% in the 1960–1984 period, but 2.1% in the 1985–...
